CONCRETE is not only a series of eyeglasses, but also an interactive performance in the spaces of the fair and an installation at the VANNI showroom.
The project was conceived from VANNI’s desire to weave together the process of eyewear design and the visionary quality of contemporary art, providing highly specialised know-how and the most innovative techniques of eyeglass crafting.
The capsule collection “VANNI for Artissima, CONCRETE by Cristian Chironi” consists of a limited series of 400 metal framed glasses with photochromic coloured lenses: 4 models (unisex/women’s) that pull inspiration from the diverse places in the world where the artist has lived and worked: Casa Wabi, Puerto Escondido; Unitè d’Habitation, Marseille; Villa Pierre Jeanneret, Chandigarh; Casa Victoria Ocampo, Buenos Aires.
Colour, composition, aesthetic form, and arrangement, recall the mental impression and lived experiences involved in the creation of this project, constructing a new relationship between design, architecture, installation, performance, the visual dimension, and narration.
The eyeglasses are finished with a special opaque varnish that’s rough to the touch, imitating the texture of cement, and present on the brow beam and on the temples are original “winglets”, or brise-soleil, of foil folded at 90 degree angles. On each of the four models the colour detailing creates unique chromatic triads.
CONCRETE extends beyond the glasses; it is also a performance by the artist at Artissima 2019. Whoever is wearing the glasses in the spaces of the Oval during the fair has the opportunity to be involved in a direct spontaneous interaction with Cristian Chironi, completely improvised by the artist.

CONCRETE è una collezione di occhiali, ma anche una performance relazionale negli spazi della fiera e un’installazione espositiva presso la showroom VANNI.
Il progetto nasce dalla volontà di VANNI di intrecciare il percorso ideativo di un occhiale alla visionarietà dell’arte contemporanea, mettendo a disposizione know-how altamente specializzato e le più innovative tecniche di lavorazioni dell’occhialeria.
La capsule collection “VANNI for Artissima, CONCRETE by Cristian Chironi” è costituita da una serie limitata di 400 occhiali in metallo con lenti fotocromatiche colorate: 4 modelli (unisex /donna) che prendono ispirazione dalle diverse abitazioni nel mondo in cui l’artista ha vissuto e lavorato: Casa Wabi, Puerto Escondido; Unitè d’Habitation, Marsiglia; Villa Pierre Jeanneret, Chandigarh; Casa Victoria Ocampo, Buenos Aires. Colore, composizione, forma estetica, predisposizione, fanno da richiamo all’impressione mentale e all’esperienza abitativa trascorsa in queste opere, creando per questo specifico progetto le fondamenta di un nuovo rapporto tra design, architettura, installazione, performance, dimensione visiva e narrazione.
Gli occhiali sono rivestiti da una speciale vernice opaca dall’effetto ruvido al tatto, che imita la matericità grezza del cemento, e presentano sul frontale e sulle aste originali “alette”, o brise-soleil, di lamina ripiegata a 90 gradi. I dettagli in colore ricreano su ognuno dei 4 occhiali triadi cromatiche uniche.
CONCRETE è anche una performance dell’artista ad Artissima 2019: infatti chi indosserà gli occhiali negli spazi dell’Oval nei giorni di fiera potrà essere coinvolto in una relazione diretta con Cristian Chironi, improvvisa, senza richiesta d’accordo e imprevedibile.
